Earlier this week I shared our first date night style post and today I’m sharing another one of our favorite date night spots! The Oklahoma City Museum of Art has been such a special place to me over the years. As you might already know, I’m an art lover (it was my major) and funny enough I actually met my husband there. Which was before we were formally set up, but that’s a long story…
For our most recent date night, I couldn’t wait to check out the Kehinde Wiley exhibit. I’m familiar with his work and have really fallen in love with his bold backdrops. His pieces take modern day street style (he literally finds his models walking down the street) and places them in classical European style settings. (Read more about him and his work here.)
Normally he paints men, so I was excited to see the pieces in his, “Economy of Grace” series. For these works he partnered with Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci to recreate the look of 18th and 19th century society figure portraits. Tisci created one-of-a-kind couture gowns for the models to wear in the portraits.
Micheal Jackson commission this work right before his death. (He died before it was finished.)
With this exhibit leaving this September 10th you will definitely need to hurry and see it before it’s gone!
What isn’t leaving anytime soon are the other amazing works on display. The famous Chihuly exhibit is one of the most popular exhibits and it shouldn’t be missed. His glass pieces are just so unbelievably stunning. My other favorite pieces include works by Georgia O’Keeffe, Andy Warhol, and Frank Stella.
On another date night we arrived early to check out the Kehinde Wiley exhibit AGAIN. And afterwards, because it was Thursday, we headed to the rooftop for cocktails. On Thursdays the museum features, “ART AFTER 5” which allows you to check out the art galleries and enjoy live music on the roof terrace all for $5. The party starts at 5 and lasts till 9! It’s such a fun event and a great place to meet up with friends or to show off OKC when company comes to town.
After enjoying a cocktail or two, we ended our evening with a delicious dinner at the Museum Cafe. We indulged in crab cakes, elk (for him not me!) and the halibut. I also must recommend coming back for brunch at the Cafe, which has been a longstanding tradition in my family.
Looking for a way to shake up your usual date night or girl’s night out? Try “Art After 5” on Thursdays! And if you love movies check out Dinner and a Movie. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights you can enjoy dinner at the Museum Cafe accompanied by a film for just $29 per person. (Last time I did that was for the Iris Apfel documentary… which was so good!)
For my local readers, I hope you check out the Kehinde Wiley exhibit before it ends September 10th and be sure to get your Art on Tap tickets. They go on sale September 8th. Don’t delay, because they always sell out fast! Hope to see you there!
