Twice a year, fashion week takes over New York City. While it can be overwhelming when you’re going for the first time, here are some tips to make sure you enjoy every girl’s dream!
THE outfit — This is the time to wear whatever makes you feel like a star. Go all out! Wear those crazy heels you’ve been saving. You can’t be too over the top, but make sure to be yourself.
Technology — Chargers, chargers, chargers. Bring an extra battery pack, or two, and make sure they’re fully charged because you will be on your phone constantly. Also bring a real camera but leave your laptop and tablet back at the hotel. Unless you have to publish content immediately, you’ll have time in the evening to work after the day’s shows… and parties. I recommend using your phone and a Wi-Fi capable camera to push mobile content throughout the day. It’ll help keep you up to date and battle the hectic schedule.
Shoes — While your 5 inch heels will look best, you will want to bring flats as backup. Tieks make the best foldable flats and I always keep a pair in my bag. This is the time that stylish sneakers can also come in handy. These Vince slip-ons would look chic with everything from pants to a skirt.
Plan all your outfits — When I pack I have my outfits planned along with every accessory… but… make sure to pack one extra ensemble. I always pack an extra dress when I travel, usually black, just in case I have an unexpected event that comes up. This Norma Kamali dress doesn’t wrinkle and is an easy palette which is perfect to pair with an outrageous pair of heels or bag.
Business cards — Pack plenty of business cards and have your date book on hand. I know we all schedule on our phones but nothing is more chic than a Smythson journal. This Fashionably Late Notebook is just perfect, don’t you think?
Snack and a smile — One day I thought I was going to pass out when I realized I’d been too busy to eat all day. Since the shows are so spread out this year, I would put my favorite KIND bar in my bag just in case I need an extra energy boost. But most importantly, remember to enjoy the shows and all the craziness that is fashion week. Breathe, take it all in, and smile!
Even though I’ll be watching fashion week from my laptop, I’ll be contributing to AOL’s NYFW Diaries. Follow along for coverage of the shows, what’s going on behind the scenes, and how to get the look of what’s going down the runway.
