Happy 1st day of May!  (Just go ahead and envision that “it’s gonna be May” meme.)  The beginning of the month means the Kentucky Derby is almost here.  I’ve always wanted to go, sip mint juleps and dress up in a giant hat!  Even if you can’t make it to Kentucky, if you’re in Oklahoma City dress up in your biggest hat and head over to Remington Park.  They’ll be having a Kentucky Derby Hat and Bowtie Contest THIS Saturday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.  It’s the perfect place to celebrate the Derby!

Wondering what to wear?  Well first of all you’re going to need a hat.  (And I scored this one I’m wearing for only $12 can you believe?)  Since this day is all about hats you’re going to want one that stands out.  The bigger the better!  I loved the drama of this one and knew it would go with the tasseled straps and ruffles on this dress.  Then I added metallic shoes and a silver bracelet to brighten up this Derby outfit.

Go for garden party look

Looking for a sweeter look.  Go girly!  This pretty little hat can be worn to the Derby and beyond.  It would even be cute with jeans and a tee!  But for this special day, I thought it matched this dress so perfectly.  (Style note — it runs very small.  I’m normally a 0 or 2 but needed the 4.)  And after the race it’s the kind of dress that would be perfect for a baby or wedding shower.  Here’s a peek at how to wear it for the Kentucky Derby…
