While I love to shop and go out regularly, I try to be a responsible and save for the future. That usually means a lot of cooking at home and sharing entrées with the hubby. Thankfully my hometown of Oklahoma City offers many fun activities and great places to eat at a fair price. I decided to scout around the city and make a quick weekly guide to some of my favorite spots that are not only budget friendly but fun.
Let’s kick off our tour by heading to downtown OKC for some vintage vibes. R&J’s Lounge and Supper Club, a 50’s inspired eatery, has some delicious classic cocktails and great happy hour specials. Who wouldn’t love tiki cocktails for happy hour? Afterwards, head to Ludivine for their always popular Monday night blue plate specials for only $10. This farm-to-fork inspired restaurant is constantly changing and evolving their menu based on what’s locally available so be sure to check out their social media each week.
After dinner hit up Dust Bowl for some bowling at this 70’s inspired bowling alley and bar. Lane’s are only $30 making it an affordable and fun evening when split with friends. The decor alone keeps me coming back — I’m just a sucker for anything retro chic. It’s also a great place to host parties or any large event requiring a lot of room. Just make sure to try their amazing selection of specialty tater tots!
The Plaza District is home to businesses, shops, restaurants, and my favorite, a shop that just sells pie. You sold yet? My favorite time to visit is during Live! On The Plaza which is a monthly block party featuring live music, featured artists, special events and local shopping. The fun takes place every second Friday of the month and always turns out a great crowd and some delicious food trucks. It’s a great time to walk around and learn all what the Plaza District has to offer.
Shop Good is local store that sells affordable fashion, gifts and decor along with the popular Warby Parker eye wear. The best part is that no matter what you buy at Shop Good, a portion of your sale goes to support and strengthen the community and meet real needs both here in Oklahoma City and around the world. On Tuesdays, don’t forget to check in next door at the Iguana Grill for their weekly Taco Tuesday special where tacos are only $1!
Between Barre3 and trips to Whole Foods, Classen Curve is pretty much where I spend most of my time. It’s an upscale shopping and dining retail space but that doesn’t mean there aren’t deals to be had. Right now so many of the shops are having great sales — check out the huge markdowns at Liberté, On A Whim, and Balliets. For lunch try the best burgers in town at Tuckers and Upper Crust has a bottle of wine and pizza special everyday from 4 – 6:30. Let’s just say I probably grab that deal more than I should!
For art lovers, the Paseo Arts District is a local favorite, home to 22 galleries along with restaurants, boutiques, and bars. Be sure to check out JRB Art at the Elms Gallery along with In Your Eye Studio and Gallery and you can end your tour at Sauced on Paseo where on Thursday you can get Sketti for only $3.50.
If you find yourself mulling over an amazing piece of art, check out the new Discover It card. They will double all the Miles you’ve earned at the end of your first year and when you use your miles there are no blackout days, and you can fly any airline, any time.
