My first stay at a 21c Museum Hotel was an unexpected treat. After our road trip to Bentonville, I absolutely fell in love with the hotel and its concept.  When they opened up a new hotel in my hometown of Oklahoma City, I fell in love all over again…

The 21c Museum Hotel collection is an award-winning group of boutique hotels that showcase contemporary art, with most of the locations being in repurposed historical buildings.  In Oklahoma City, the new 21c was originally a Ford Motor Company assembly plant.  This structure has gone through plenty of changes over the years.  Several years ago, I actually attended art shows that were held there when it was a completely vacant building. For me, this made it so fitting — the building became an actual art museum!

So when the new OKC 21c opened, I was excited to check it out with a little staycation. Remember the penguins at the Bentonville location?  They’re in OKC too!  Checking in, there was a purple penguin standing guard.  The lobby is in the middle of an art gallery, welcoming guests with whimsical and thoughtful art.  The rooms are HUGE and loft-like with large windows and tall ceilings.  Instantly I forget that I’m in Oklahoma City and I feel like I have arrived in NYC or Chicago in someone’s fabulous loft apartment.  After a tour of our room, we set off to explore all the hotel has to offer.

Before dinner we enjoyed the current exhibit fittingly called “Labor and Materials.” While my art nerd self would gladly tell you all about about the pieces, let me just say you should be sure to check out the one with Cohibas.  Since we had dinner plans, we rushed over to Mary Eddy’s which was located inside the hotel.  Our favorites were the shrooms pizza, the red snapper, and the lemon-soaked ricotta cake.  Everything was delicious!  Since the hotel museum never closes, after dinner we took our drinks and went back to see what we missed. One room of the museum is pitch dark with a screen and some of the craziest chairs you’ve ever sat it. They’re like a carnival ride, especially following a couple of glasses of champagne. After taking a spin, I was ready to go back to the room and crash.

The next morning we awoke to room service and a penguin at our door!  The bed was so comfortable I didn’t want to move… except to go to my massage.  Since the hotel had just opened, the spa was still getting the finishing touches, but they were kind enough to show me around.  It has a sauna, steam room, and fitness facility.  I didn’t get to try them out, but I did have the most wonderful massage. Afterward I threw on my robe and used my sleepwalking skills to get back to my room.

While staying at the OKC 21c Museum Hotel, I completely forgot I was only a couple of miles from my house! They provided the ultimate staycation, and now I have some amazing news…
