decorating in Wonderland – living room edition

So you find the perfect house and you move in — the end.  We all know this isn’t the case.  The walls that you thought were grey now appear to be a weird green.  And if you’re Miss-I-can-do-it-myself you convince your poor husband you can indeed repaint everything yourselves and then spend all the money you saved on a beach in Bora Bora.  (We have yet to take that trip.)

Here is how the previous owner chose to furnish the house…

Tastefully done, but not our style.

We decided to paint the walls grey and the ceiling, crown molding, and fireplace white.  We fell in love with a sectional from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams.  Honestly, I’ve never been a fan of sectionals but this one maximized the space in our living room and gave us a comfy place to lounge.  If you’re in the Oklahoma City area check out Port Interiors in Edmond — it’s an amazing store and an MGBM dealer.  (We love the owner who helped us with our sofa!)

Here’s the breakdown.

Still plenty of work ahead of us.

Here is the room without of all the scribbling.  At first we leaned towards a white rug, but now I’m not so sure…

In the war over the white or grey rug, Roxy has clearly chosen her side.  You might think, oooh how cute she is posing on that rug.”  She’s not posing, she just won’t get off that rug!  The white sheepskin rug is from Sam’s can you believe, and the grey one is from Urban Outfitters.

All of my favorite books now have a home underneath our “book it” coffee table.  It was the first piece of furniture we bought together.  I just love how modern it looks.  My Tom Ford book is standing guarding on the top of the table.  Nobody messes with Tom!

Here are a couple items I’m thinking about.

West Elm Bone side table

Jonathan Adler ‘Nixon’ throw

Fox Figurine (reminds me of a certain foxy furball)

This is where I need some help…

Would you go with a white/cream rug or the grey one?  What about a patterned one?  What about throw pillows, should I add some color or go with a graphic pattern?  I would love all the help I can get!

I would go with the gray rug because a) Roxy likes it and dogs don’t lie and b) what if one day Roxy gets upset with you and pees on your white rug?! I have a dog and he does these types of things when he gets upset with me for whatever reason. I don’t know what color I’d choose for throw pillows but I do think they should be interesting and something people notice. What a great room. Looks so cozy. Good luck!

Thank you for the advice Diana! I’m leaning towards grey or maybe some kind of pattern. I need all the luck I can get 😉

  • OOOOH, love it! I have grey walls in some of my rooms too, just love them. I’g go with the grey rug because that’s a high-traffic area. I’ve had a white/cream flokati before, and it shows everything. Bold geometric pattern pillows in grey/black/white or with another accent color would work really well, too.

Thank you! I love the white but I’m sure it’s a bad idea and anything geometric is my cup of tea.

  • I have that end table! I love it – highly recommend.

I’m glad you told me, I was wondering about the quality. Now I have to order it, thanks Lindsay!

Great start! I think the gray rug looks best with your sectional. I would avoid a patterned rug for now because of your tile. Also, I would add a chair in a beautiful caramel colored leather. Good luck!

  • I’m going to go against what everyone else has said, I like a white rug. As long as you’re a stickler about no shoes on it and you wipe Roxy’s feet off well after every outdoor adventure, I think it’ll wear well. I also think you should do a ton of white throw pillows on the couch in varying textures (fur, cableknit woven, canvas, leather, etc)
I love the end table by the way, it’s nice and modern like your coffee table 🙂

Tips on rugs, you need a large one that goes a bit under the couch, fully under the coffee table and a few feet out past that towards the fireplace. Measure it out, tape it off on the floor and see how you like it. Then, go to Floor Trader (off I-40 I think in the furniture district) and pick out some carpet they sell by the square foot, I love the idea of a shag or something kinda nubby. Tell them your measurements, they’ll actually finish off the edges of the piece for you and it’s SO MUCH CHEAPER than buying a pre-made rug. You just need to buy the foam sticky stuff for the underside so it doesn’t slide around unless the couch and coffee table will hold it in place well.

I go for the white rug…just looks “cool” to me, Roxy wouldn’t dirty it up LOL love the looks and that end table is awesome! Just my 2 cents
